To get a conversation started with me about doing a PhD, you need three things:
1: A lead-authored peer-reviewed article in a Q1 journal. That means you’re the first or sole author, and the journal is ranked Q1 by Scimago Journal Rank (SJR). Published and in-press articles both count. If you don’t have one yet, I can’t take things further. That isn’t a judgement about your potential; it’s the bar I’ve had to set because of how many requests I get.
2: You must meet Monash’s entry requirements for the PhD. Check the entry requirements for the PhD in Education, including the English language requirements. Monash also has an eligibility checker you can use.
3: Your project needs to sit close to my research. I currently supervise projects on:
Assessment validity in a time of AI: what we can justifiably claim about what people can do when AI can do so much of the work
Feedback literacy: how students and teachers make the most of feedback, good or bad
Most of my research so far has been in higher education, but I’m also open to projects in schools, vocational education and professional learning too.
At a later stage I’ll ask you for a proposal and a CV but I don’t need those just now.
Doing a PhD with me
I supervise PhD students in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. I get dozens of supervision requests every week, which is far more than I can take on or reply to.
This page explains who I can supervise and how to express interest. I don’t respond to supervision requests sent by email or LinkedIn.

What happens next
I look at every expression of interest. If your paper meets the criterion and your interests fit my research, I’ll be in touch within four weeks to talk about a possible project. If you haven’t heard from me by then, I won’t be taking things further. I’m sorry I can’t reply to everyone individually.
If we decide to go ahead, I’ll provide the Supervisor Supporting Statement you’ll need for the Faculty’s formal Expression of Interest. That’s a separate step from this form. We’ll also put together a supervision team, because Monash PhDs have at least two supervisors. Admission and scholarships are competitive and are decided by Monash, not by me. For the details, see the Faculty’s research degree admission process and Monash’s graduate research scholarships.
